The cats were all very happy, but sometimes the big cats, Thomas and Zigger, got a little bored with their peaceful lives, and longed for some adventure. Zigger, a long, sleek tiger cat with big wide emerald green eyes, was especially restless. He often went prowling far from home, looking for new places to go and things to see.

One afternoon, Zigger was out prowling down along Johnson Creek. He went a long way down the creek and eventually he found himself in a place he had never seen before. It was a place crowded with tall trees, without a person or a house or a car anywhere in sight. The air was quiet except for the sound of the wind in the trees and birds singing. Zigger had never been this far from home. This was the first time he had ever been to a place where there was no sign of a person or a house for miles around. He was a little scared, but he was also excited.

Forest Portal

As he walked in the woods, Zigger saw something glowing in the forest. He crept up closer and saw the strangest thing, he saw a big ring of light, just hanging there among the trees. Zigger thought it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen!

When Zigger looked into the ring, he didn’t see more trees. Instead he saw a strange and wondrous sight. He saw stars and planets! The ring was a magic doorway to other worlds. Zigger was really excited now. Here was his chance to go on the ultimate adventure!

He decided he wanted a buddy with him on his adventure, so he went home to get Thomas. When Zigger got home, he found Thomas doing one of his favorite things. He was rolling around on the sidewalk in front of their house.

"Thomas, stop rolling and listen to me!" Zigger said. "I found something fantastic while I was out prowling."

Zigger told Thomas all about the magic circle. He wanted Thomas to go through the circle with him and explore other worlds. Thomas thought it was a great idea. He was getting bored with rolling on the sidewalk day after day.

Sinbad meets Zigger

"OK," Thomas said. "Let’s get Sinbad and see if he wants to go."

Zigger looked at Sinbad, who was sitting on the porch steps. "You’ve got to be kidding," he said. "Look at him, he’s just a baby. We’d have to look after him all the time. We’d have to take care of him. Sinbad would just get in our way."

But Thomas knew that Sinbad was a brave little guy, and he thought the kitten would be a great companion to bring along. Besides, he loved Sinbad and didn’t want to leave him behind.

"I want Sinbad to go," Thomas said, "and if he can’t go, I won’t go!"

"All right, we’ll bring him," Zigger said, "but it’s a bad idea, you’ll see. He’ll be in our way and we will get stuck watching him and taking care of him all the time."

Thomas didn’t agree with Zigger. Sinbad was just a tiny kitten, but he was brave and smart. Thomas stood his ground, and Sinbad came along.
