The Progression of Mania
This series of drawings is based on Carolís description of her experiences with Bipolar Disorder or Manic Depression.
Mania often starts out as a pleasant experience. It can begin with a surge of energy, creativity and confidence. The early stages of mania can be very productive.
As the mania progresses, it becomes more irratic. The person careens out of control, making rash decisions that can have devastating consequences.
Itís not unusual for a person experiencing a manic episode to spend thousands of dollars on pointless purchases, or to get on a plane and take a trip on impulse.
A person can fly into an uncontrollable rage and become become violent during mania. Carol told me about episodes of mania during which she had suicidal rages so severe that she had to be hospitalized and held down with restaints
