“The Unbeliever’s Wife”   Oil on Canvas

This is one of the last paintings I made before the depression had deepened to the point where I could no longer force myself to draw and paint. This painting explores the meaninglessness of the universe as seen through the deadened eyes of depression. I was raised a Catholic, yet I feared I was living in a souless, Godless universe.

The man and woman in the painting are very old and nearing the end of their lives. The woman still has her faith, and she feels comforted by the belief that she will be with God in heaven after she dies. Her husband does not have any firm belief in God or an afterlife to comfort him as he faces death.
